Performance Time: 7:30 pm

Grammy winner Alison Brown takes the banjo and guitar far beyond their Appalachian roots with a high octane blend of bluegrass, jazz, Celtic and Latin influences that has been described as simply jaw-dropping.

Bluegrass for jazzers, jazz for bluegrassers; something for everyone in between! Members of her Quartet include John R Burr (piano), Garry West (bass) and Larry Atamanuik (drums).  More information is available at http://compassrecords.com/alison-brown.

“Like James Taylor’s voice or B.B. King’s guitar, Alison Brown’s banjo is an instrument possessed of a unique sonic signature and an inescapable beauty.” -Billboard Magazine

Rani Arbo and daisy mayhem

In concert in Hall-Moser Theatre

Saturday, November 13, 2010
Performance Time: 7:30pm

So, what's a daisy mayhem?  Wicked grooves, sublime lead singing, great harmonies, sparkling original songs, and a deep repertoire that spans 200 years of American music. Four people who share an irresistible chemistry on stage. An unusually gleeful string band that celebrates both tradition and improvisation and that stumps the categorizers. (Are they an agnostic gospel band? A homeopathic bluegrass band? Are they crazy?). Worth seeing...

What does it sound like?  Start with a fiddle, a guitar, and a standup bass. Add a cardboard box with a suitcase bass drum and tin can cymbals, played by an ex-rock and zydeco drummer. Over that fine groove, hang Rani Arbo's expressive alto, seamless four-part harmonies, and a splash of banjo and ukulele, and you have it.  Find out more at www.raniarbo.com.

“If Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem offer to cook at your place, you better open up all the doors, and borrow every table and chair you can because the whole town should come."
-Folk Alley

"A sparkling, high energy show marked by breathtaking musicianship."

International Guitar Night

In concert in Hall-Moser Theatre
Sponsored by First Merchants Bank
Friday, January 21, 2011
Performance Time: 7:30 pm

International Guitar Night is North America’s premier mobile guitar festival. Known as North America’s premier mobile guitar festival, International Guitar Night (IGN) is sponsored by Acoustic Guitar Magazine.  It is the only production of its kind to have grassroots origins. Ever since its beginning in 1995 in a converted laundromat in the California Bay Area, IGN has featured the best performing guitar composers from around the world. Since the beginning, audiences have cherished the friendly informal ambiance of the performances. Participants have relished the chance IGN affords to express reverence for one another, and to collaborate rather than compete. The unique brand of “guitar positivity” the forum provides has helped make IGN the most successful guitar showcase of its kind.

For the November 2010 Canadian tour and for the January/February 2011 U.S. tour, Brian Gore will be joined by Clive Carroll, England's show-stopping steel string guitarist and favorite IGN alumnus; Alexandre Gismonti, the son and protege of legendary Brazilian guitarist Egberto Gismonti, and Pino Forastiere from Italy, whose two handed melodic style has placed him at the forefront of the new contemporary steel string guitar world.   Find out more at http://internationalguitarnight.squarespace.com.

“With the International Guitar Night, Brian Gore has created a new niche for the myriad of styles that can be played by the unaccompanied acoustic guitar, as well as marvelous opportunity for virtuosos to interact and learn from one another onstage.”

Chic Gamine

In concert in Hall-Moser Theatre

Saturday, February 12, 2011
Performance Time: 7:30pm

Chic Gamine, the impishly charming Winnipeg/Montreal-based vocal quintet, has been serenading its audiences since the summer of 2007.  The group is composed of singers Ariane Jean, Andrina Turenne, Alexa Dirks, Annick Brémault and drummer Sacha Daoud.  Over the years, its members have been integral parts of a multitude of projects, notably, R’n’B/Soul sensation little boy boom, Brazilian Funk/Pop flavoured Gaïa and International Independant Music Award laureate, World Vocal ensemble Madrigaïa.

With a solo percussionist as their main musical support, Chic Gamine use their voices as instruments, effortlessly launching into intricate string arrangements, bass-heavy rhythm sections and lush harmonies.  These multifariously talented songwriters create a sound that resonates with soul, passion, and an unabashedly random and sometimes downright peculiar brand of humor that reels audiences in and leaves them begging for more.  Gospel, Soul, R'n'B, '50's Doo-Wop, Brazilian forro and French chanson are infused into the voices and rhythms of these five effervescent songmakers, combining for a sound that is uniquely Chic Gamine.  More information about the artists can be found at www.chicgamine.com.

Sponsored by Bank of Geneva

Saturday, March 12, 2011
Performance Time: 7:30pm

Classical violin enthusiasts will be delighted on Saturday, March 12 when Boris Kucharsky performs in solo recital.  Of Russian, Slovakian and German descent, Boris Kucharsky was born in Dortmund, Germany, in 1971.  At the age of 13 he was admitted to the Menuhin School in London.  Influenced by Yehudi Menuhin as his teacher and mentor, Boris Kucharsky has since earned the reputation as one of the outstanding violinists of his generation.

His repertoire encompasses the whole spectrum from Baroque to Contemporary. Several composers have written works for him, including American composer Robert Aldridge and Slovakian composer Eugen Suchon, whose violin concerto "Fantasia and Burleska” is dedicated to Kucharsky. His recording of this concerto was awarded Best Classical Recording of the year in 1999. Kucharsky’s recent concert series of the complete cycle of Beethoven's violin sonatas has received great acclaim and is being released on CD.

He has appeared as soloist with orchestras such as the European Chamber Orchestra, Slovak Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Schwerin,  Suk Chamber Orchestra, Dortmund Philharmonic, Karlsbad Symphony Orchestra,  Kammerakademie Neuss and the Prague Chamber Orchestra, and has given recitals at many of the major European festivals, including Schleswig Holstein, Gstaad, Lichfield, Dvorak, and the BHS Slovakia festivals.

“He is a beautiful violinist, sensitive musician and deeply moving to listen to.  Impeccable taste and polish as well as deep feeling mark his performance.”

--Yehudi Menuhin
