Hartford City Artist Published in AARP Foundation Calendar

Hartford City artist Leslie Newton was one of fourteen artists nationwide chosen as winners in the AARP Foundation’s Calendar Contest.   Her painting Taos Pueblo with Water Spouts will appear in the 2009 AARP Foundation Calendar.

This was the fourth year of the Calendar Contest.  Nearly 400 entries were submitted, of which fourteen were selected for the calendar, one for each month and the front and back covers. Over 800,000 copies of the calendar are printed and mailed to AARP Foundation supporters across the country.

Newton’s donated original artwork was placed on display at the AARP Life@50+ National Event this September in Washington, DC.  A silent auction of all of the winners’ artwork was held, with the proceeds from the silent auction benefiting the AARP Foundation.

Leslie Newton is an elementary art instructor for the Jay School Corporation.  Since 2001 she has served on the Region Five Roundtable, an advisory council to Arts Place on issues relating to the Indiana Arts Commission and Arts Place policies, cultural needs and strategic planning.

The artist enjoys working with a variety of media, especially focusing on oil painting. Her recent work is based on images from the large number of photos taken while in New Mexico, an opportunity provided from a 2007 Lilly Creativity Grant.
