Quick Facts:
The National Center for Great Lakes Native American
Culture (NCGLNAC) was founded in 2001.
NCGLNAC is made up of Native and non-Native people
who have been involved with and are dedicated to
preserving the tradition, art, and history of Great
Lakes Native American tribes.
NCGLNAC owns nearly 30 acres of wooded land,
complete with pond and wetlands in Portland,
Indiana. The first ethno-botanical hiking trail
will be open to the public in 2008.

Preserving Great Lakes Native American Culture
The
National Center for Great Lakes Native American
Culture, Incorporated (NCGLNAC), is a
not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving
Great Lakes Native American Indian art, handcrafts,
and history through a variety of in-house and
outreach programs. Since it was founded in May of
2001, NCGLNAC has organized regular events to
preserve and promote Native culture through
workshops and other activities.
This summer will mark the fifth annual
Gathering of Great Lakes Nations Pow Wow. The
event will be held on June 7-8 at the Tri-State Gas
Engine and Tractor Grounds in Portland, Indiana.
The Gathering is a celebration of Great Lakes Native
American culture. Visitors can enjoy Native
American drums, singers and dancers, a pre-1840’s
living history camp, Native American foods, artisan
demonstrations, storytelling and an auction of
museum quality items. Vendors will be selling
Native American items.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to
4 p.m. Sunday. Grand Entry will take place at 1
p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday.
All events are open to the public. Admission is $4
for adults and children under 12 are admitted free
of charge. Maximum family admission is $15.
The National Center for Great Lakes Native American
Culture is one of the region five organizations that
receive funding through the Regional Arts
Partnership. The Fifth Annual Gathering of Great
Lakes Nations Pow Wow is funded in part by an arts
project support grant. |
